Chapter

Ifocused my newfound power, channeling the raw energy of the Frozen Flame through my body. The air around me crackled with an otherworldly chill, and I felt the familiar tingle of ice forming at my fingertips. But this time, it was different. Stronger. More potent.

With a grunt of effort, I thrust my hands forward. A massive wall of ice erupted from the ground, stretching from floor to ceiling in a matter of seconds. The barrier was at least a foot thick, its surface rippling with intricate patterns that seemed to shift and dance in the dim light of the cavern.

Blackwood's eyes widened in shock, his usual smugness replaced by a flicker of genuine fear. His cultists stumbled backward, muttering prayers or curses – I couldn't tell which.

"That ought to hold you for a bit," I said, my voice sounding strange even to my own ears. It had a resonance to it, like I was speaking from the bottom of a well. "Now, if you'll excuse us, we've got a cave-in to escape."

I turned to Hannah and Eira, both of whom were staring at me with a mixture of awe and apprehension. Can't say I blamed them. I barely recognized myself at that moment.

"Right," I said, trying to inject some normalcy into my tone. "Time to scarper before this whole place comes down on our heads."

As if on cue, another tremor shook the cavern. A chunk of rock the size of a microwave detached from the ceiling, smashing to pieces mere feet from where we stood.

"Couldn't have put it better myself," Hannah said, snapping out of her daze. She grabbed Eira's arm and started pulling her towards the far side of the chamber. "There's got to be another way out of here."

I followed, my eyes darting around the cavern. The place was a maze of stalagmites and ancient pillars, shadows dancing in the eerie light cast by the Frozen Flame. Finding an exit wasn't going to be easy, especially with the ground shaking like a bloody paint mixer.

Behind us, I heard the sound of ice cracking. Glancing over my shoulder, I saw Blackwood pressing his hands against my makeshift barrier. Dark energy pulsed from his fingertips, slowly eating away at the ice.

"Might want to pick up the pace," I called out. "Our friend back there isn't taking 'no' for an answer."

We scrambled over fallen rocks and squeezed between narrow gaps, searching desperately for any sign of an exit. The rumbling grew louder, and I could feel the temperature in the cavern rising. Whatever mystic mojo had kept this place stable for centuries was clearly coming undone.

"This way!" I shouted, my voice barely audible over the din of collapsing rock.

I forged ahead, using quick bursts of icy energy to clear our path. A massive boulder crashed down, threatening to crush Hannah. With a flick of my wrist, I split it in two, the halves crashing harmlessly to either side of her.

"Bloody hell," she muttered, wide-eyed. "That's new."

"Tell me about it," I grunted, already focusing on the next obstacle.
